Depending on machine requirements, HSK Form A, B, D, or E holders must be equipped with a coolant tube or sealing plug. Using holders without a coolant tube or fitted sealing plug could cause unseen spindle damage.
EPB holders HSK-A and HSK-E (standard range), and HSK-B and D (specials), are delivered without coolant tube (2) or sealing plug (1). Coolant tube (2), tube spanner (3) and sealing plug (1) must be ordered separately.
Coolant tubes of two parts and including two identical seals allow a slight angular movement of ±1° (standard requirement). They require a specific mounting spanner (there is no standardized design).
Plugs (delivered with a seal) use standard hexagonal locking keys not available in the catalogue. Note: DIN 69893 Form C and F do not generally require a coolant tube or plug.
Through coolant and sealing functions are provided by the locking unit.
Seco offers air cooling cones and contact bushes for cooling bells to assist with cooling Shrinkfit holders.
Air cooling cones offer a simple alternative to finned cooling tubes. These components direct the air stream to the holder’s front end and provide a cooling time of approximately seven minutes. The cones fit directly onto stations of support boxes.
Contact bushes interface with the front end of the holder and disperse heat toward the refrigerated cooling bell. The use of multiple cooling bells with contact bushes can allow simultaneous cooling of two holders.
Sealing plugs apply to a number of through-coolant holder designs. A number of holders are of the ADB through-coolant design. For B through coolant (flange through coolant), the two originally fitted sealing plugs in the holder’s flange have to be removed, and a non-through-coolant pull stud must be used to seal the back of the holder.
For AD through coolant (central drawbar through coolant), the two sealing plugs in the holder’s flange have to be in place, and a through-coolant pull stud has to be used.
Sealing paste required for sealing plug mounting is not available from Seco-EPB; we recommend ’LOCTITE 577 - Thread sealing paste’.
Pull studs (also called retention knobs) are the link between the machine drawbar and the toolholder. Pulling forces can reach 3000 daN on SA 50 spindles, making the superior material and hardening quality of EPB pull studs important.
Precision machining guarantees precise positioning and safe locking of the holder in the spindle. Most machines require a standard pull stud design (DIN, ISO, BT, CAT) and some require a specific design. Specific pull studs are available on request, please enquire: a sketch or drawing should accompany the enquiry.
A variety of reduction sleeves are available to increase the flexibility of Seco tooling systems by allowing chucks to securely accommodate a greater range of tool diameters.
Reduction sleeves for Power Milling Chucks (PMCh) provide each chuck with the ability to hold multiple shank diameters. Suitable for all tool types with a cylindrical shank, these sleeves can be used in both roughing and finishing applications and provide stable performance in applications generating high levels of torque. PMCh reduction sleeves are available for cylindrical, Weldon and Whistle Notch ∅ ≤ 25 mm (1.0").
For tools without internal coolant channels, the PMCh reduction sleeves feature slots along the tool shank that can deliver coolant to the cutting zone. Alternatively, stop screws can be used for tools that accommodate through-tool coolant.
Reduction sleeves for hydraulic chucks act as split collets and grip more shank types and sizes: cylindrical, Weldon, Whistle Notch ∅ ≤ 25 mm (1.0"). Run-out with the sleeve is maximum 5 μm at 3 x d (d being the internal diameter of the sleeve). Transmittable torque with a reduction sleeve is at least equivalent to chucks without a sleeve.
Note: As grooves are not all along the sleeves for hydraulic chucks, coolant is still forced through the tool center (as when using a hydraulic chuck without sleeve).
Seco offers a range of ER collets to support our collet chucks. ER collets are available as standard, sealed and sealed with through-coolant channels directed to the cutting edge.
ER HP collets offer extremely high precision for EPB 5672, achieving a maximum run-out of just 3 µm at a gauge projection of 3xD. This collet contains a distinctive plastic ring that makes it easily visually distinguishable from less precise collets.
ISO 15488-B standard ER collets are available for EPB 5675 and provide a maximum run-out of 10 µm at 3xD.
ER tapping collets with a square drive type are offered for EPB 5867 synchronized tapping chucks. These collets provide precise tap holding and positive torque transmission from toolholders to the tap tool.
All ER collet tapers are angled by α=16 degrees.
Sealing rings for ER sealing nuts on ER chucks are delivered as standard with drilled stop end screws for coolant through plain-ended tool shanks. To seal other types of shanks, sealing rings are used in conjunction with sealing nuts. Sealing range of a ring is nominal to -0.5 mm. Coolant pressure maximum 100 bar.
Insert sealing ring into the nut from the back, until it “clicks” into the nut’s front face. The sealing ring’s marked face should be oriented inside the nut to avoid erosion of the diameter information marking. Release by applying pressure onto the sealing ring’s front face.
For quick changing of the tap and adapter, the adapter has to be chosen according to the tap shank diameter and its square size. Both dimensions are in relation to norms DIN, ISO, and PIPE, which also covers thread size. Suitable for taps with or without a through-coolant channel.
The torque of an adapter with a torque limiter is set according to the thread size when delivered. Therefore, a tap with the same shank diameter and same square size, but with a different pitch (e.g. ∅6 x 4.9 comes in M5 and M6) cannot be substituted. For adapters without a torque limiter they can, as only tap shank diameter and square are critical.
A kit of Seco balancing screws for Shrinkfit holders EPB 5603 and EPB 5600 is available as Accessories (Part N°90ZQ01). The kit contains screws of different masses to be fitted into the balancing threaded holes of these Shrinkfit holders.
Balancing screws allow fine-tuned balancing of Shrinkfit holders and tool assemblies when using a suitable balancing machine. Appropriate balancing screws are meant to be screwed until stop in the threaded holes, with a torque of 1 Nm.
